BACS Falls Down

The BACS system for making online bank payments fell over this week because of a software problem.

400,000 may not get their wages paid into their accounts before Monday because of this problem. Hopefully banks will be understanding of this problem for people and not wack them with charges because of it.

Seeing as most of the banking system runs on auto-pilot it would seem likely that the banking systems computers will be sending out thousands of overdrawn account letters automatically as peoples mortgages and other direct debits try to go through the system.

Hopefully those banks will automatically cancel the charges but even if they do there will be a lot of people having difficulties over the next few days because they will be unable to withdraw money from ATM machines. The pubs may be a bit quieter than usual tonight. :o )

It just goes to show how fragile our modern society really is. One small computer glitch and 400,000 people suffer.
